It is with profound sadness and the deepest respect that the Tullamore Musical Society announces the passing of Brian Hughes, a cherished and long-standing member whose life and contributions left an indelible mark on the society. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his children, Colin, Michelle, and Nicola, and to his extended family and circle of friends during this difficult time.
Brian’s connection to Tullamore Musical Society (TMS) began in 1955, not as a formal member, but as a CBS schoolboy participating in a sketch for the opening concert of the then Tullamore Musical and Dramatic Society. He officially made his stage debut in 1967 in The Quaker Girl, and from that moment, his talent for high-quality comedic performance became a hallmark of countless productions, delighting audiences for decades. In 1985, he was nominated for an A.I.M.S award for his role as Og in Finian’s Rainbow, reflecting his dedication to the craft and his ability to bring characters to life with warmth and humor.
Beyond the stage, Brian served TMS with distinction, dedicating many years as a committee member and as Chairperson from 2001 to 2004. His encouragement, generosity of time, and unwavering support helped shape the society into the vibrant community it is today. Brian’s dedication was part of a remarkable family legacy: his father, Jack, and brother, Willie Hughes, played key roles in the society’s early development, while his mother, Pauline, contributed tirelessly to Front of House, earning recognition with an A.I.M.S award-winning team in 2001.
Brian’s late wife, Mairéad, also served TMS as Honorary Secretary, Treasurer, and in Front of House, continuing the family’s tradition of service. Their children, Colin, Nicola, and Michelle, have been actively involved both on stage and behind the scenes, with Colin serving as Chairperson for recent productions and receiving his own A.I.M.S nomination in 2023 for his role in Michael Collins.
Brian Hughes was more than a performer or committee member—he was a cornerstone of TMS, remembered for his kindness, humor, and steadfast dedication. His influence, friendships, and spirit of community will endure through the society he helped to build.
May Brian rest in peace, and may his legacy live on in the music, memories, and generations of performers he inspired.
