It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Aristides Sismanis on March 20, 2026, at the age of 76. A distinguished physician, educator, and leader, Dr. Sismanis devoted nearly 46 years to the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the School of Medicine, leaving a lasting impact on the institution and the broader medical community.
Dr. Sismanis was a highly respected neurotologist and a worldwide authority on pulsatile tinnitus. His career was marked by remarkable achievements, including serving as president of the Virginia Society of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, receiving the Honor Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, and being recognized multiple times as a “top doc” by Richmond Magazine. An accomplished researcher, teacher, and speaker, he authored numerous publications, delivered over 250 presentations globally, and served on many national committees, advancing both clinical practice and medical scholarship.
From 1995 to 2008, Dr. Sismanis served as chair of the department, building a strong foundation that continues to guide its success today. Alongside his wife, Dr. Anna Sismanis, he established the Aristides Sismanis, M.D. and Anna Sismanis, M.D. Professorship in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery in 2010, ensuring that his dedication to teaching and patient care would inspire future generations of physicians.
Dr. Sismanis will be remembered not only for his medical expertise but also for his generosity, wisdom, and compassion. He was a devoted mentor, a thoughtful leader, and a trusted friend, whose kindness touched countless colleagues, students, and patients.
