It is with deep sadness that we honor the lives and lasting contributions of Euan Frew and Robin Hunter, two respected former members of Ayr Rugby Football Club whose passing marks a significant loss to the club and its wider community.
Euan Frew, who passed away on March 8, was a life member whose dedication and service helped shape the foundation of the club in its early years at Millbrae. As a committee member, he played a pivotal role in the development of the club’s facilities, notably convening the “Ways and Means Committee,” which was instrumental in transforming the Millbrae farmhouse into a welcoming clubhouse. His commitment extended to taking on the role of Bar Convenor, a responsibility he embraced with characteristic reliability and good humor. Euan’s contributions reflected his deep loyalty and passion for the club.
Robin Hunter, who passed away on March 24, will be remembered for his outstanding achievements on the field. As 1st XV Captain during the 1970–71 season, he demonstrated exceptional and resilience, notably playing in all 38 matches that year without absence. Having previously played for West of Scotland Rugby Club, Robin brought skill and determination to Ayr as a wing forward. His dedication to rugby continued beyond his playing career, later serving as President of Cumnock Rugby Club, where he remained an influential figure in the sport.
Both Euan and Robin leave behind legacies of commitment, camaraderie, and service that will not be forgotten. Their contributions helped shape not only their respective clubs but also the spirit of rugby within their communities.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and all who mourn their loss. They will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
